1 Corinthians 14:1, 3-4 King James Version (KJV)

1. Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

3. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

4. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

The gift of prophecy is for the edifying of the church.

The gift of prophecy, one of the spiritual gifts, is to be desired.

1 Corinthians 14:5-6 King James Version (KJV)

5. I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

6. Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

Moses wished that all God’s people were prophets.

Numbers 11:29 King James Version (KJV)

29. And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!



According to the bible, people prophesied when the spirit of god rested or came upon them.

Numbers 11:25 King James Version (KJV)

25. And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.


1 Samuel 10:10 -11 King James Version (KJV)

10. And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

11. And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

20. And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.

People can also prophesy when an evil spirit rests on them. Therefore we should check that what a prophet says is truth against what the bible says.

1 Samuel 18:10-11 King James Version (KJV)

10. And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.

11. And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.


Isaiah 8:20 King James Version (KJV)

20. To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

God has promised to pour out His spirit in the last days and many will receive the gift of prophecy.

28. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:


Acts 2:16-18 King James Version (KJV)

16. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

17. And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

18. And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
