And The Lost Coin

Daily Bible Verses 295

Luke 15:1-2 King James Version (KJV)

1. Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.

2. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

Thank God Jesus receives sinners - When the Pharisees and scribes murmured about Jesus receiving sinners and eating with them, Jesus responded with the parable of the lost sheep and the lost coin.

Jesus Parable Of The Lost Sheep

Luke 15:3-7
King James Version (KJV)

3. And he spake this parable unto them, saying,

4. What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

5. And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

6. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.

7. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

The explanation -
"In the company about Jesus there were shepherd, and also men who had money invested in flocks and herds, and all could appreciate His illustration...

The sheep that has strayed from the fold is the most helpless of all creatures. It must be sought for by the shepherd, for it connot find its way back.

So with the soul that has wandered away from God; he is as helpless as the lost sheep, and unless divine love had come to his rescue he could never find his way to God." From Christ's Object Lessons

Daily Bible Verses 295
Jesus Parable Of The Lost Coin

Luke 15:8-10
King James Version (KJV)

8. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?

9. And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.

10. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

The explanation -
"In the East the houses of the poor ususally consisted of but one room, often windowless and dark. The room was rarely swept, and a peice of money falling on the floor would be speedily covered by the dust and rubbish. In order that it might be found, even in the daytime, a candle must be lighted, and the house must be swept diligently...

The lost coin represents those who are lost in trespasses and sins, but who have no sense of their condition. They are estranged from God, but they know it not...

The coin, though lying among dust and rubbish, is a piece of silver still. Its owner seeks it because it is of value. So every soul, however degraded by sin, is in God's sight accounted precious...

Wherever we may be, there the lost piece of silver awaits our search. Are we seeking for it? Day by day we meet with those who take no interest in religious things; we talk with them, we visit among them; do we show an interest in their spiritual welfare?

Do we present Christ to them as the sin-pardoning Saviour?" From Christ's Object Lessons
